Letter Writing Guidelines
Guidelines for Writing Letters to our Troops

When writing to the troops, please do not include any personal phone numbers.  Email or mail addresses in the letters are OK if from an adult, school or teacher.  You may use Operation: S.A.M., P.O. Box 2992, Livermore, CA 94551 or the name of your school, church or other organization for replies.  Include the school’s email address if you wish, with the room number or teacher’s name as reference.  For minors, last names, phone numbers, email or personal addresses are not a good idea.  Please make sure there are no questions involving killing, death or dying.   Sometimes the younger children are curious about that and do ask.  Also comments on surviving the war are not very upbeat.

If you would like to prepare some return address labels with the school’s (church or organization) address and “Attention: _______” (child’s first name) - that system has worked very well.  It makes it easier for replies.

Your letters will be shipped in one of Operation: S.A.M.’s comfort packages and will go to random military personnel.  In many cases, we rely on the Chaplains to hand out the packages, so we seldom have any information regarding the destination or recipient.

Please provide a way for the recipient to respond if he/she can.  There are no guarantees that you will receive a reply.  The troops are busy, and although they would like to reply, they are not always in a position to do so.  The children should be advised ahead of time.  Without a doubt, the troops are always happy to receive letters and words of support from home.

Any questions, please write to P.O. Box 2992 Livermore, CA  94551 or  Email: operationsam@comcast.net
